Messi Magic Hands Barca Derby Delight

Barcelona – Luis Suarez celebrated his bumper new five-year Barcelona deal in style with a double as the champions defeated Espanyol 4-1 in the Catalan derby to move to within three points of La Liga leaders Real Madrid.

However, it was Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi’s skills that stole the show as Barca took advantage of Real’s duties in winning the Club World Cup earlier on Sunday to cut the gap at the top ahead of La Liga’s three-week winter break.

Iniesta teed up Suarez for an early opener before both Iniesta and Messi showed sublime touches for the second eventually finished off by Suarez.

Messi created Barca’s third as well for Jordi Alba before David Lopez pulled a goal back for Espanyol as their 10-game unbeaten run came to an end.

The five-time World Player of the Year wasn’t to be denied, though, as Messi got the goal his performance deserved a minute from time.

“Leo’s move (for the second goal) is a PlayStation move from a unique player that only he can do,” Suarez told Spanish TV Station Movistar.

Barca’s upturn in form in recent weeks has coincided with the return of veteran playmaker Iniesta from a six-week injury layoff and the Spanish international was to the fore as the hosts dominated throughout.

“We’ve enjoyed watching players in their natural habitat doing incredible, unpredictable things and making us enjoy this marvellous sport,” added Barca boss Luis Enrique.

Iniesta sparked a sweeping counter-attack on eight minutes involving all three of Barca’s star-studded frontline as he fed Suarez, who spun away from the Espanyol defence, before picking out Neymar and the Brazilian’s low cross was fired inches wide by Messi.

Barca had to wait just 10 minutes more to open the scoring as another sumptuous Iniesta pass was expertly controlled by Suarez and he bore down on goal before slotting into the far corner.

For all their dominance in possession, the champions had to wait till the start of the second period to enjoy more clear chances as Messi curled wide from the edge of the box before he teed up Suarez with a brilliant defence splitting pass.

This time the Uruguayan was denied by Diego Lopez, but at a cost as the Espanyol ‘keeper injured his knee in clashing with Suarez and had to be replaced by Roberto.

Suarez moved level with Messi as La Liga’s top scorer with 12 with Barca’s second, but once again the credit should go to Iniesta and Messi as they dribbled past a combined seven Espanyol defenders before Messi’s shot was parried by Roberto and Suarez snaffled up the rebound.

Seconds later Messi tore the Espanyol defence apart once more to leave Jordi Alba free to drill the ball into the far corner.

Espanyol did muster a reply to salvage some pride with their first shot on target as Gerard Moreno headed into Lopez’s path, who had stormed forward from centre-back to find the top corner.

However, a virtuoso display from Messi got the finale it deserved as he and Suarez exchanged a one-two before the Argentine prodded between Roberto’s legs.

Boy, 3, Out Shopping With Grandman, Dies In Road Rage Shooting

Little Rock – A 3-year-old boy being taken on a shopping trip by his grandmother was killed in a road rage shooting when a driver opened fire on the grandmother’s car because he thought she “wasn’t moving fast enough at a stop sign”, police said.

The boy and his grandmother were at the stop sign in southwest Little Rock on Saturday evening when a driver, apparently angry about the delay, stepped out of his car and opened fire, police said. The boy was struck by gunfire at least once, they said.

The grandmother, who wasn’t struck, drove away and called police from a shopping centre.

Police arrived at the shopping centre and found the boy in the car outside a JCPenney department store. The boy was taken to a hospital, where he died shortly after, becoming the second young child shot dead in a road rage incident in the city in the last few weeks.

Police Lieutenant Steve McClanahan said investigators believe the boy and his grandmother “were completely innocent” and have no relationship with Saturday’s shooter, who was being sought. He said the grandmother simply was “driving the car and was taking her grandson shopping when the incident occurred”.

Police said they were looking for an older black Chevrolet Impala. Police did not release a detailed description of the man who was driving it.

Last month, a 2-year-old girl was killed when a car drove by and someone fired into her vehicle; the shooter in that case hasn’t been captured.

Police Chief Kenton Buckner said the road rage killings were frustrating for the police department and the community, especially because the young victims were “very innocent” and “can do very little to protect themselves”.

“We cannot have a community to where the least protected among us, being infants, who are dying these senseless crimes in our city,” Buckner said.

He said he didn’t know if the children’s shootings were related.

Singer would marry an entertainer only in a perfect world

While most entertainers are convinced that they cannot marry an entertainer if they hoped to make it work, Korede Bello sees things differently.
The singer admits that he would marry an entertainer but on the condition that they would be left alone which is obviously impossible.

During a chat with Saturday Beats, the Mavin artiste said, “I can marry an entertainer if the world would not give us problems.”
Korede who claims to be single at the moment, went on to describe his kind of woman.
“If you follow me on my social media platforms, you would get to know who my girlfriend is very soon. When you see her, you would know. I am still single but the thing that I look for in the opposite sex is honest and has a positive attitude. It does not really matter what the person sounds like but she must be beautiful,” he said.
Following speculations of a possible rivalry between himself and labelmate, Reekado Banks, considering the kind of year they have had, the singer was quick to lay the rumours to rest.

He described what exists between him and his label mate as ‘healthy competition’.
“I have a healthy competition with Rekado Banks. Like most people have noticed, when he drops a hit song, shortly after, I drop mine or someone else on the label drops theirs. I do not see anything wrong with it. The only kind of competition that exists is a healthy one and it is like we sharpen ourselves. It is just like two swords sharpening themselves. I am not just talking about Reekado but every other person on the label. We have been dropping hit songs back to back. It is a healthy competition on the label, no rivalry or negativity,” he said.

Switching gears, Canada’s BlackBerry to open autonomous vehicle hub

Canada’s BlackBerry Ltd (BB.TO) will open an autonomous driving research centre on Monday, as it tries to make itself an indispensable under-the-hood piece of the automotive industry’s weaponry in the self-driving vehicle arms race.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will attend the launch by the Waterloo, Ontario-based smartphone pioneer, the prime minister’s office said on Sunday. A Blackberry spokeswoman deferred any comment on the project until Monday.

Blackberry, once known for its phones but now betting its future on the more profitable business of making software and managing mobile devices after largely ceding the smartphone market to the likes of Apple and Samsung, is expanding subsidiary QNX’s Ottawa facility to focus on developing advanced driver assistance and autonomous vehicle technology.

After a detour where QNX’s industrial-focused software was used to reinvent the now-discarded BlackBerry phone operating system, BlackBerry is focused on how its embedded software interacts with the explosion of sensors, cameras and other components required for a car to drive itself.

But while deep-pocketed Silicon Valley has invested heavily in the artificial intelligence and machine learning required for autonomy, more financially-constrained BlackBerry has not, eyeing instead a niche role as a trusty sidekick.

“What QNX is doing is providing the infrastructure that allows you to build higher-level algorithms and to also acquire data from the sensors in a reliable manner,” said Sebastian Fischmeister, a University of Waterloo associate professor who has worked with QNX since 2009.

“Our play in this is that we provide the software foundation for these high-performance compute platforms,” QNX head John Wall said in an interview on Friday .

BlackBerry and the university’s research teams got the green light to test Ford Motor Co (F.N) Lincoln vehicles with autonomous features on Ontario’s public roads late last month. The company has also inked a deal to work directly with the Detroit-based car maker as it works to get fleets of robot ride-sharing vehicles to market by 2021.

Wall said the company is in advanced discussions with “more than one or two” other major global automakers about similar partnerships, but also cautioned that the hype of robot cars would take a long time to be fully realised.

QNX already powers infotainment and telematics systems in millions of cars, giving an option to automakers watching the speed at which firms such as Tesla Motors Inc (TSLA.O), ride-hailing company Uber Technologies Inc [UBER.UL], and Alphabet Inc’s (GOOGL.O) Google have advanced their self-driving projects.

“If they can prove that they have the whole package and the security, they could absolutely dominate the market” for autonomous vehicle operating systems, said Sam Fiorani, an analyst at Auto Forecast Solutions.

Risks remain, including the challenge from chipmakers such as Intel Corp (INTC.O) who, eyeing demand for their processors in future robot cars, could discount or give away their own security and safety software in order to sell more hardware.

“Some of these companies can afford to lose a lot of money in their pursuit of adoption and market share,” said Chris Rommel, who leads embedded technology research at VDC Research.

Zsa Zsa Gabor Dies

Los Angeles – Zsa Zsa Gabor, the Hungarian-born Hollywood siren perhaps better known for her prodigious love life than her movie credits, died Sunday, her husband said. She was 99.

An emotional Frederic von Anhalt told AFP that Gabor had passed away at home, after suffering a heart attack, surrounded by friends and family.

“Everybody was there. She didn’t die alone,” he told AFP by telephone, choking back sobs.

The pair married in 1986, making it by far the longest of her nine marriages.

Gabor, who in her heyday embodied the film industry’s platinum blonde ideal, was a voluptuous former beauty queen with a penchant for lame gowns that accentuated her hourglass curves.

Her resume includes a long list of film roles in such hit movies as Moulin Rouge, Lili and Arrivederci Baby!

But the actress was at least as famous for her conquests between the sheets as her triumphs on the silver screen.

Like her famous great-granddaughter by marriage Paris Hilton, Gabor was among the first celebrities to be famous for her celebrity.

Her thick Hungarian accent was much parodied – especially her penchant for calling everyone she met “darling” – or “dahlink” as she pronounced it.

It became her unique signature.

“I call everyone ‘dahlink’ because I can’t remember their names,” the socialite once said.

Fellow actress Barbara Eden paid tribute to the star.

“Rest in peace Zsa Zsa Gabor. She and her sisters were lovely ladies who were always fun and delightful to be around,” Eden wrote on Twitter.

Nine marriages

Born in Hungary on 6 February, 1917, as Sari Gabor, Zsa Zsa was one of a trio of ravishing sisters known for their shapely curves and passion for well-heeled men.

Her sisters were Magda, and Hollywood star Eva Gabor, who achieved greater acting success in the United States than her sister for her role in the 1960s hit television series Green Acres.

Zsa Zsa also came to be known for her love of diamonds and frequently was photographed dripping in the sparkling gems.

During her many marriages and a prodigious number of affairs that made her a fixture in America’s gossip magazines, she had just one child — a daughter Francesca, fathered by hotel magnate Conrad Hilton.

Francesca died early last year from a heart attack. She had been feuding with Gabor’s husband for years, who kept her away from her famous mother.

Gabor wrote in her 1993 autobiography One Lifetime is Not Enough that she lost her virginity at the age of 15 to Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey.

“For the rest of my life, I would search for another god to eclipse him,” Gabor wrote.

Her romantic scorecard was a Who’s Who of Hollywood heartthrobs of her day, and her kiss-and-tell book detailed romances with screen legends Sean Connery and Frank Sinatra.

Gabor was known to be picky, however, spurning the advances of John F. Kennedy, Elvis Presley, John Huston and Henry Fonda, she wrote in her autobiography.

Her romantic dalliances even included a flirtation with screen legend Greta Garbo.

“She kissed me straight on the mouth. And I couldn’t help kissing her back because she was so overwhelmingly strong and so beautiful,” Gabor wrote.

In June 1989, Gabor made headlines when she slapped the face of a Beverly Hills police officer for giving her a traffic ticket. She was sentenced to three days in jail and ordered to pay $13 000 in court costs.

Gabor was briefly married to British-born actor George Sanders, who later wooed and briefly wed her sister Magda.

Love, sex, romance, divorce

The loquacious actress was known for an endless stream of bons mots, mostly uttered on the talkshow circuit, about her favorite topics: love, sex, romance and divorce.

They included:

– A man in love is incomplete until he has married. Then he’s finished.

– Getting divorced just because you don’t love a man is almost as silly as getting married just because you do.

– Husbands are like fires – they go out when unattended.

– I never hated a man enough to give him diamonds back.

– I’m a great housekeeper. I get divorced. I keep the house.

– You never really know a man until you have divorced him.

Gabor, who had been in and out of hospital since a hip replacement in 2010, had several close brushes with death in recent years. She was read her last rites at one point more than six year ago.

A 2002 car accident left the actress partially paralyzed and wheelchair-bound. She also had a stroke in 2005. One of her legs was partially amputated.

Gunmen attack buses meant for Syria evacuation

BEIRUT: Gunmen attacked buses sent to evacuate people from two pro-regime villages in north-west Syria on Sunday but a senior military source said the incident should not disrupt parallel evacuations from Aleppo.

Thousands of people were to leave the last rebel-held parts of the northern city of Aleppo in exchange for residents leaving Fuaa and Kafraya, Shia villages, in the neighbouring province of Idlib.

But two dozen armed men attacked buses on their way to the villages under rebel siege.

They made the drivers get out, opened fire on the vehicles and set fire to the fuel tanks of at least 20 buses, the reporter said.

The attack came after five other buses had entered the villages.

The identity of the attackers was not immediately clear, but the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said two member groups of a coalition of Islamist rebels controlling most of Idlib had disagreed over the evacuations.

Fateh al-Sham Front, which was formerly known as the Al Nusra Front before renouncing ties with Al Qaeda, disagreed with Ahrar al-Sham over the deal, the monitoring group said.

But the military source said the attack should not affect any of the evacuation operations. “There’s collective will for the deal to stay in place. There must be solutions for all obstacles,” the source said.

Dozens of buses on Sunday began entering the last rebel-held parts of east Aleppo to resume the evacuation of thousands of increasingly desperate trapped civilians and rebels.

The operation was suspended on Friday, a day after convoys of evacuees had begun leaving the rebel sector under a deal allowing the regime to take full control of the battleground city.

A senior Iranian official on Sunday complained of bias in attitudes towards civilians in east Aleppo and those of the two Shia villages. “While the Western-Hebrew-Arabic media have united to spread false information on the human losses in Aleppo, they remain silent on the need to evacuate the wounded and elderly from Fuaa and Kafraya,” said Ali Shamkhani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.
