”I have always sensed that my father was too close to my elder sister. The man was just too fond of her and obviously so. Over the years, I even grew jealous considering the attention he gave her to my own expense. Me and my sister are my parents only two children. I used to tell my mother about what I felt about my father but she always waved me off.

“It’s just in your imagination. Your father loves you all equally” she would say.

”Still I felt sidelined by my father and this caused some friction in the relationship between me and my sister though we still got along pretty well. Well, I got admission to study Accounting in Benue State Univerity last year but my sister is still seeking admission. So I came home last week on a short visit and that was when I made the most shocking discovery of my life.

”I walked into the house quietly to surprise my family since they didn’t I was coming and I saw my father on top of my sister having s*x with her on a couch. I screamed and ran outside. I sat down under a tree in front of our house badly shaken. I just picked my small bag and began to go back to school. I couldn’t handle it. Now, I don’t even know what to do; whether to tell my mother or just keep quiet about it.”

What will you advise her to do?

Singapore unveils self-driving scooter

SINGAPORE: Researchers in Singapore have come up with a solution to curb accidents involving phone-obsessed walkers, a self-driving mobility scooter that drives single pedestrians along footpaths.

The one-seater, four-wheel, 50-kg vehicle travels at a top speed of 6kmh and has laser sensors to help navigate around obstacles.

The scooter, developed by the National University of Singapore (NUS), is the city-state’s latest experiment with driverless vehicles as it pushes ahead with its vision of using autonomous technology to help deal with the challenges of its limited land and labour.

The scooter has undergone successful tests on campus and developers said it can help improve mobility for all ages, cut down on the need for cars and also lower accident rates.

“I’m sure you have experienced people who just use their handphone while walking, and almost run into you … so it would be nice if you are just sitting down and checking your emails,” said NUS Associate Professor and project leader Marcelo Ang Jr. “We just give you more choices.”

Ang Jr said that the scooter would be able to work in tandem with other driverless vehicles in Singapore, where robo-taxis are being tested and trials are planned for self-driving buses.

He said the scooter was meant for use on narrow pathways which larger vehicles cannot access.

Currently the scooter takes a few seconds to calibrate a different route when it nears an obstacle — something Ang Jr. said the team was looking to improve.

Users, though, did not seem too bothered by the brief pause.

“It goes really smoothly and travels very safely,” said student Kevin Xiangyu Hui, who tested the scooter.

The project, a collaboration between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART), and NUS will be further tested and is not for sale.

‘Rape’ complainant missing for a month

FAISALABAD: Iqbal Town police could not find a clue to a woman who lodged a complaint with the Punjab IG office, Lahore, over a month ago, accusing a DSP of rape.

In her application, the resident of Chak 62-JB alleged that the DSP had been raping her for the last four months. The woman said the suspect had threatened to kill her father and brother in an encounter if she talked to anyone about the issue.

In her complaint, she warned of committing suicide if justice was not done to her.

A police officer said the IG had forwarded the application for a probe into the issue. He said police had made announcements through mosques of the village but could not find a clue to the complainant.

Iqbal Town SP Baka Muhammad, who is probing the issue, told Dawn that he had failed to trace the whereabouts of the woman even after a month. The SP said a local lumberdar had also been contacted who denied having any kind of information about the woman.

He said the inquiry was pending and would be sent back if the girl didn’t record her statement.

The DSP claimed that a special branch official had already probed the issue and found it baseless.

“The issue is four to five months old and the file has been closed.”

Karachiites, get ready for a movie-binge weekend!

The festival is taking place at the ZVMG Rangoonwala Community Centre, Karachi on November 27-28.

What’s special about the fest is that it puts the spotlight on the work of the underappreciated indie filmmakers of Pakistan.

“There are so many independent filmmakers in Pakistan who are making amazing films with great narratives but we rarely ever get to hear of them, therefore Karachi University and Rangoonwala came together to resolve this and highlight the work of these filmmakers by initiating the first ever ‘Pakistan Calling Film Festival’,” said the festival organisers to Images.

There will be panel discussions, on subjects as diverse as “The Nexus of Film and Television”, “The Future of Animation in Pakistan”, “The Business of Film” and “Film and Social Change”. There are also workshops planned for aspiring actors, animators, writers and cinematographers.

“The Festival aims at showcasing the talent and work of all these filmmakers and form a community of filmmakers,” the organisers added. “While the first Pakistan Calling Film Festival is fuelled by the passion of Pakistani filmmakers who dream big and work in strenuous conditions; we aspire to continue growing in the years to follow into a platform that brings together Pakistani thinkers and doers to work towards building a community of positive change-makers.”

Films will also be competing for awards, which include Best Short Fiction, Best Animation and Best Non-Fiction Short Film.

Du Plessis denies cheating, says made ‘scapegoat’

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis said on Wednesday he had been made a ‘scapegoat’ by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and denied any wrongdoing after being found guilty of ball-tampering during the second test against Australia.

Du Plessis, who was sanctioned for the same offence in 2013, was charged last week after footage emerged from the Hobart test of him applying saliva to the ball with a mint in his mouth.

Cricketers in the field are permitted to, and routinely do, ‘shine’ one side of the ball by applying saliva with their fingers and rubbing it on their uniforms to encourage the ball to swing in the air when it is bowled. However, it is forbidden to use ‘artificial’ substances to work on the ball.

After a marathon ICC hearing in Adelaide on Tuesday, the 32-year-old was fined his entire match fee but cleared to play in the series finale in Adelaide.

The ICC verdict was defended by its South African Chief Executive David Richardson as a “line in the sand” but current and former players slammed the decision, saying every team shined the ball in the same way.

Du Plessis, standing in for injured regular skipper AB de Villiers, expressed regret that the case had taken away from his team’s series-winning triumph in Australia and said he had never intended to cheat.

“I still completely disagree with (the verdict),” Du Plessis told a media conference in Adelaide in calm and measured tones.

“I felt like I’ve done nothing wrong. It’s not like I was trying to cheat or anything, I was shining the ball. It’s something that all cricketers do.”

“Our mouths are always full of sugar, I think it’s such a grey area in the laws of cricket,” he said.

“I just ask for that everyone gets treated the same way. I think that’s fair. Obviously the ICC has taken a stance against me, to use me probably as a scapegoat now, but all you can ask for is that everyone gets treated the same.”

Big debate

Sitting beside Du Plessis, Cricket South Africa Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said he had asked the skipper to hold off from appealing the charge pending further information from the ICC.

“We will pick up this topic with the ICC,” Lorgat, a former chief executive of the sport’s global governing body, said.

“It’s a big academic debate about this. I am personally aware of the pervasiveness of this issue. I get stories told all the time.”

South Africa wrapped up the series 2-0 by thrashing Australia by an innings and 80 runs in Hobart last week, with the touring side’s bowlers dominating.

“I suppose the thing that’s most disappointed us is that we’ve dominated and played exceptionally well,” said Du Plessis.

“That’s taken all the shine away from that, excuse the pun,” he added, breaking into a wry smile as reporters chuckled.

Du Plessis was backed by Australia captain Steve Smith, who denied his team had ever complained about the tactic.

“I’ve seen Faf’s comments in his press conference … We along with every other team around the world shine the ball in the same way,” Smith told reporters.

The charge laid by Richardson last week angered the South African camp, as did the close attention from local journalists, one of whom clashed with a team security guard at Adelaide Airport after the Proteas touched down on Monday.

“Thanks for all the love last week,” Du Plessis said with irony to reporters.

“What happened at the airport was pretty disappointing … Because I was never really going to be able to give any answers (before the hearing).”

“I did feel there was a sense of (the media) looking for a reaction.”

Singapore executes Chijioke Stephen Obioha for drug crime

Earlier this month we brought you the news of Chijoke Stephen obioha who was to be executed in Singaporean but pleaded for clemacy, well did not go as he planned..

– Chijioke Stephen Obioha was executed after a last minute call for clemency was rejected

– Amnesty International had called for his death sentence to be reduced to life inprisonment

– The country has a strong stance against drug-related crimes

The Singaporean government has executed Chijioke Stephen Obioha for drug trafficking in the early hours of Friday, November 18.

Also executed was 31-year-old Malaysian, Devendran A/L Supramaniam after the country rejected a last-minute call for clemency.

Obioha was found in possession of 2,604.56g of cannabis, surpassing the statutory amount of 500 grams that under Singapore law triggers the automatic presumption of trafficking in 2007.

Chijioke Stephen Obioha was executed by the Singaporean government for drug trafficking

It was reported that he had been in Singapore since 2005 to try out for a football club but was arrested by anti-narcotics officers.

Obioha, a graduate of industrial chemistry from the University of Benin in Nigeria, was also found to possess keys to a room containing additional prohibited substances and this led the authorities to presume him guilty of possession and knowledge of the drugs.

Amnesty International had called for clemency citing that his offence did not fall under the category of most-serious crime but this was turned down by Singapore which is notorious for using the death sentence to punish drug-offenders.

His counsel filed a criminal motion in court for a stay of execution and to commute his death sentence to life imprisonment on Wednesday Nov 16 but it was dismissed on Thursday and his parents were duly informed of the execution.

Amnesty International wrote: “After the rejection of his clemency appeal in April 2015, his execution was set for May 15, 2015. It was stayed a day earlier to allow him apply for resentencing.

“His family were only informed on October 25, 2016 that he had resolved to withdraw his application for resentencing earlier in the year, following legal advice that he would not qualify as “courier” under the amended laws.

“Consequently, the Court of Appeal lifted the stay of execution with effect from October 24, resulting in the execution date to be set for November 18

“Chijioke Stephen Obioha graduated in Industrial Chemistry from Benin University in Nigeria. He moved to Singapore in 2005, seeking to join a football club. His family members, who currently live in Nigeria and the United Kingdom, have been unable to travel to visit and had limited ability to assist him.

“Throughout the duration of the proceedings, they have received sporadic and often delayed updates, including when a legal representative was removed from the case.”

The Roman catholic prison ministry claimed the body of Chijioke following the execution

3 sentenced to death for killing Suleiman Afolabi

– Three people were sentenced to death for killing one Suleiman Afolabi on Christmas day

– They claimed they were attacked by the deceased’s brother

– The judge dismissed their claim before giving out her sentence

Ibrahim Omilade who is the son of a traditional ruler in Lagos Chief Bashiru Omilade has been sentenced to death by hanging after the murder of one Suleiman Afolabi during a fight on Christmas day in 2012.

The Nation reports that two brothers, Shola and Kayode Oni have also been sentenced to death for the same crime.

It was reported that the gruesome murder of Suleiman occoured at Eyin Ogun Street, Mafoluku in Oshodi where he was machete by his assailants.

Justice Kudirat Jose of a Lagos high court in Ikeja sentenced the trio to death after she found them guilty of the charges of conspiracy and murder preferred against them by the prosecution team, Mr. Babatunde Oguntemowo and Mr. Olarewaju Ajanaku.

She said: “I pronounce the defendants guilty as charged in respect of the offence of murder and conspiracy and are hereby sentenced to death by hanging by the neck until their death.”

She urged youths to try to settle differences without resorting to deadly attacks.

The convicts had argued in court that they were invited by a friend to celebrate Christmas in 2014 when a boy told them that Akeem Afolabi who is a brother to the deceased had vowed to deal with them.

They claimed that had gone to inquire the reason for the threat but Akeem ordered them to go away but this generated into a fight and their attacker went inside to get a machete.

They argued that it was when they tried to dodge the swinging machete that Suleiman was slashed in the waist.

They also claimed that it was days later they heard of the victim’s death but the judge rejected their story on the basis that it sounded incredible and rehearsed.

She sentenced the trio to 12 years imprisonment for the crime of conspiracy before handing the death sentence.
